      In order to solve the huge military and political expenses and maintain the struggle with the Qing dynasty, Zheng Chenggong inherited his father’s maritime business and vigorously developed it.
      He set up five mountain firms and five sea firms to transport goods from the mainland to overseas as a result,he accumulateda large amount of wealth through east-west trade and implemented“Commercial earnings subsidize the army”.
      Zheng's main maritime trade partners were Japan and Southeast Asian countries. Zheng Chenggong exported raw silk, silk fabrics, sugar, porcelain, leather, medicinal materials, handicrafts and other goods overseas, and imported gold, silver, copper, knives, marine products, mountain products and spices from Japan and Southeast Asian countries.
      Because of the huge profits, Zheng Chenggong was able to feed more than 100,000 well-equipped troops in this small coastal area of southern Fujian, and to fight against the Qing rulers who occupied most of the country for more than a decade.
